"Lack of appointments at the eye outpatient clinics"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

In December 2017 I had emergency eye surgery and up until June 18 I saw a consultant every six weeks. After the June appointment I was expecting an appointment six weeks later.  At the reception I was told that I would go on a waiting list and they would contact me.  In-spite of several calls and even a visit to the hospital to ask again, I finally received an appointment for February 2019.  At the consultation I was informed, that because of the delay, my sight is now permanently damaged.  To add insult to injury, when I went to book a further 6-week appointment, I was told that the next appointment was at the end of the year.

This was extremely distressing.  The Receptionist didn't show any compassion or care and was very unhelpful. When I collected the prescription for eye drops, the pharmacist only gave me enough for half the amount I needed even though the consultant had written a prescription for enough eye drops for 8 weeks. I was informed that I should visit my GP for the rest of the prescription.  This happened the last time I had the drops and my GP was less than helpful.

I do not know what to do now, apart from maybe going private. I feel totally let down by the hospital.  The Consultants, especially Mr Groppe have been brilliant, compassionate and very caring and I cannot fault their care.

I would appreciate a response and an appointment in the next 6 weeks (i.e. by 4th April 2019)

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments on this website.

I am sorry to read of the problems you have experienced in trying to book your appointment with the eye Department.

I am concerned to read that you have said the delay in booking an appointment has led to further eye damage.

I would be very grateful if you could contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01296 316042 to talk about your experience, and connect you to the eye department to secure the appointment that is required.

In the meantime I have shared your comments with the nurse consultant in the ophthalmology team.

Kind regards

Anthony Banton
