"My gratitude to all those who cared for me at Whiston Hospital and St Barts Hospital"

About: St Bartholomews Day Hospital Whiston Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

Very sore big toe, helped to bathroom by daughter, returned to bed and started shaking (rigour). Lost consciousness, daughter called emergency Dr who came and sent for ambulance - had very high temp and heart failure. Rushed to Whiston Hospital, came round and seen by dcotor. On trolley while a real bed was found for me, while I waited for a place on ward. Taken to C1 early in the morning, made very comfortable and well attended by doctors and nurses.

Condition worsened and pneumonia diagnosed, given 50/50 chance of survival. Treatment discussed, Doctors decided on drugs. My daughter and her very supportive friend were given free accommodation and food to stay near me. Wonderful care day and night.

Moved to C5, something of a shock to find myself with some very old and very sick patients. Night very disturbed to my terrifying dreams (delirium) and treatment of other patients needs. The atmosphere was cheerful, caring although I felt there were periods of short staffing particularly at night.

Physiotherapists excellent, got me in chair, able to wash, eventually use a tripod to toilet.

A few days later transferred to St Barts for rehab. Own room, privacy, unstinting care from a wonderful staff on all levels. Cheerful happy environment, excellent team work. Good food superior cleanliness. Physiotherapy continued - able to walk with stick. Tested in kitchen - tea, toast and later a light meal. Home visit to assess my needs and I finally returned home around three weeks after my first admission.

My undying gratitude to all those who helped my return to life, from near death.
