"Poole Hospital Prosthetics Service"

About: Poole General Hospital / Breast surgery

(as the patient),

After significant surgery for Breast Cancer I was referred to the Prosthetics Service for a prosthetic nipple to be created. This was done over two appointments, the first to colour match and make a casting and the second for the fitting.

I honestly had no idea how my new nipple would be created but I had not anticipated the care and time Heidi would take to make sure the colour match was perfect. After about 45 minutes of mixing and matching she created six colours that perfectly recreated my remaining nipple and took an impression to work from.

Today I returned to have my new nipple fitted and I am totally blown away by it. The time, care and attention to detail by Heidi means I have a perfect nipple. If it wasn’t for the obvious scars from my surgery anyone looking at me would be unable to tell which was the prosthetic. Coincidentally I was seeing my Consultant and Breast Care Nurse after and they couldn’t get over what an amazing match it is and took photos to show other ladies what can be achieved.

Throughout my diagnosis and treatment I have been very factual and task focused and have not cried but I cried today when I saw my nipple in place for the first time. The nipple isn’t about treating my cancer it’s something special and personal for me and the care Heidi has taken and her empathy for all I’ve gone through really touched me. I would highly recommend Heidi for any ladies in the same situation she is so patient, kind and caring and nothing is too much trouble for her

Dear Volansds39

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your comment.

I will certainly let Heidi know what her care and empathy meant to you by passing on your comments to her and to the breast care team.

I'm sure your words will help to reassure other ladies who find themselves in a similar situation to you.

I wish you well for the future and am delighted that you are so happy with the outcome of your treatment.

All best wishes,

Patient Experience Team, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
