"Another Poem about my most recent visit to Gastro ward"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

BLEEP

I’ve woken in a bed
I’m pleased I’m not dead
But I need my sleep
And a noise went creep
Bleep – Bleep Bleep - Bleep
It rattled round my head
Like a lump of lead
Bleep – Bleep Bleep – Bleep
I tried to count some sheep
But couldn’t dig that deep
Bleep – Bleep Bleep – Bleep
So I waited for a nurse
But only felt the cursed
Bleep –Bleep Bleep – Bleep
Now I know I’m on a ward
Where lives hang by a chord
Bleep – Bleep Bleep - Bleep
And at night there’s only two
Which is far too few
Bleep – Bleep Bleep – Bleep
And patients really ill
Close to losing the will
Bleep – Bleep Bleep – Bleep
I’ve been here for days
And still in a daze
Bleep – Bleep Bleep - Bleep
And I realise what’s at stake
That I can’t just have my cake
Bleep – Bleep Bleep - Bleep
I’m sure I’ll get well
And not descend to hell
Bleep – Bleep Bleep – Bleep
So thanks nurses all
Carry on with your call
I’ll try to dig deep
I’ll will myself to sleep
Bleep – Bleep Bleep – Bleep Bleep - Bleep BleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeP !

Dear VolChap

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your recent experience on our Gastro Ward. Firstly, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you. My name is Michaela and I work within the Patient and Family Experience Team, part of my role is to review all feedback we receive on here and ensure that it is brought to the attention of the relevant staff.

Your poem is a honest representation of any vulnerable patients experience and I am sure very relatable to many patients on our wards, whilst praising the nursing staff who work so hard, I will be sharing with our Gastro team.

I will also be sharing with the wider trust as I think it really highlights many factors which impact our patients in a different way and it will provide a unique opportunity for our staff to reflect upon and really put themselves in our patient’s shoes.

As a Trust we are always looking at ways in which we can learn from individuals’ experiences of our services so thank you again for sharing your poem and I hope that you are recovering well from your recent inpatient stay.

With best wishes

Michaela Brewer, Patient Experience Coordinator

Update posted by VolChap (the patient)

Hi Michaela

My poem was a bit tongue in cheek, but also there is the serious point about a decent sleep being part of the healing process. I do appreciate that at night the duty nurses need to be able to hear where they are needed but the"bleeps" are a bit random and if a nurse us at the far end of tbe ward it may be difficult to react as fast as might be considered necessary. I just wondered if in this techie age it might be possible to devise a lighting system which could indicate the whereabouts of the most recently activated machine so that it could be dealt with as soon as possible without disturbing those patients still sleeping.

In the meantime I remain in awe of all the staff who work so hard and so cheerfully on what must be a very difficult and time consuming ward.

With very best wishes Volchap
