My son who has learning difficulties and is phobic about medical procedures had to have an operation in the Day Surgery unit in January.
This was his 3rd attempt at the operation, the first being in Alderhay some 6 years ago, the 2nd in PRH Telford, both of which ended with his panic attacks aborting the procedure.
After considerable counselling he felt able to attempt the procedure again, this time at RSH.
We visited the day surgery unit numerous times prior to surgery and on each occasion the staff were very kind, supportive and concerned that he would feel as confident and relaxed as possible on the day of his operation.
They took time to show him around and explain what would happen and showed him the anaesthetic room and theatre so he was familiar with the surroundings.
Everyone we spoke to was prepared to spend time with him and be as reassuring and supportive as they could. despite the pressure of their work.
At his pre-op assessment the two nurses he saw were superb and kept him relaxed and engaged.
The pre visit dose of diazepam helped, but for the first time he agreed to have his blood pressure taken.
On the day of his operation the two nurses assigned to him were very kind and professional and extremely supportive, ensuring he was aware of what was happening at all times.
He was able to have additional sedatives to keep him calm.
The anaesthetic team were excellent.
They managed to fit a cannula to his right hand, his left hand proving impossible, and throughout their attempts ensured my son was calm and confident with what they were doing.
They discussed topics my son was interested in to keep him distracted.
We were then allowed down to the anaesthetic room with him so we were able to stay with him until he was asleep, again ensuring he felt safe throughout.
After his operation was over I was allowed to go into the recovery ward to be with him as he came around to ensure the strange surroundings did not make him panic.
We cannot thank the staff involved in his operation on the day and those we met beforehand enough.
Their care and consideration for our son's fears ensured that this time he was able to go through with the operation successfully.
They are a superb and very professional team.
Many thanks also to my son's urology consultant who has supported us through the second and final attempt at this operation - we really appreciate your kindness and patience.
"Superb care for very scared learning disabled..."
