I was taken to The Royal Sussex Hospital yesterday by ambulance with breathing difficulties. I was brought into what can only be described as a hallway and left with up to 20 other patients all in need of medical attention. Paramedics were waiting with patients brought in by ambulance as they couldn't leave until the patient was seen. It was extremely cramped, unsanitary and undignified. I have never experienced anything like this before in other hospitals and I am shocked that this is clearly an on going issue at the Royal Sussex. It took 2 hours to be seen by a doctor. After which i was wheeled back into the same hallway and left for 4 hours. When I asked for pain relief it took the nurses an hour and a half to get me two paracetamol. All patients were left without food or water or adequate attention. The elderly lady next to me was so cold she was shaking and the nurses ignored her when she called them. A paramedic had to fetch her a blanket. When I asked to go to the loo the nurse rolled his eyes at me and eventually showed me to a room where casts were put on and asked me to go to the loo on a filthy commode. It was degrading. 3 hours later a consultant finally saw me and sent me for an x-ray. Another two hour wait for an x-ray (there was no one even in the x-ray office who could tell us what was going on) and I was eventually discharged. On the whole a dreadful experience. To make matters worse the hospital was completely and utterly filthy. The floors looked like they hadnt been cleaned in days and the xray area had food all over the table and muck on the floor. I cannot believe the difference in the standard of care and cleanliness between our local hospital East Surrey and the Royal Sussex. Something needs to be done and fast.
