"Disappointed in unprofessionalism"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Surgical Assessment Unit

(as a service user),

After being admitted to Surgical Assessment Unit overall the nurses and doctors I saw were fantastic.

I was however disappointed in a Nursing Assistant both days was very unprofessional at several occasions.

On day one the nursing assistant spoke rudely to me, which I addressed. Although anytime the assistant was in the bay with a nurse it felt to me like they overtook the conversation and undermined the nursing staff.

The following day the staff member was eating sweets at the desk, and trying to yet again seemed to be taking over from a nurse who was identifying a patient on the computer, the nursing assistant was asked by an elderly patient to take her to the toilet. The response was I will in a minute I am busy just now. The patient asked a further three times to which the response was on each occasion becoming more abrupt with a rude tone saying that they were busy and would be there when they can. Which I fully accept if the staff member was actually busy, they weren’t they were eating and having nothing more than a carry on with another member of staff. I was upset to then see the staff member discussing the patient and the fact they were too busy and hopefully someone else will do it but they certainly weren’t. To act like this is so horrible to see, but to be unprofessional in front of other patient is disgusting and with no shame.

I was glad to see a very busy nurse realise that the patient hadn’t been taking to the toilet and them stepping in. While the nursing assistant took over from another member of staff to complete a patients observations instead of assisting a patient who had asked for help.

It’s a shame to see this lack of care, I think though I am more disappointed that this is the support the staff nurses on this ward had. Clearly busy the last thing they need is a member of staff with poor attitudes who seem to be selective on the tasks they undertake and overtake conversations from experienced nursing staff.

I appreciate you taking the time to get in touch, it’s really important that we hear from our patients about their experiences. Thank you for sharing a balanced view of the care you received, its very useful to listen and learn from patients who have experienced both good and poor care. I would like to apologize for the negative way in which the nursing assistant communicated with you. This is not how we expect our patients to feel or be cared for.

If I could ask you to get in touch with me, as I would really like the opportunity to investigate your experience further, you can contact me on pamela.scott3@nhs.net or call me on 01324 567472
