"Persistent issues with Q2 stroke unit"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital

When a loved one has a stroke it is a difficult time for all but unfortunately the poor level of overall care provided on Q2 exacerbates stress levels to an unimaginable level.

Some staff provide excellent care but they are sadly very much in the minority.

Despite making a formal complaint we are still faced with difficulties in accessing details of medication given, toileting and feeding. We have regularly watched patients food left on the side to go cold with no-one to feed them, nurses in gloves touching catheters and then other patients and nurses treating different patients and using the computer wearing the same gloves.

The nurse dispensing medicine was unable to tell me what the antibiotics were for - luckily a trainee knew!

Information provided to one professional by the family is rarely, if ever, cascaded to others within the team and the sisters have regularly stated that they do not know basics such as the positioning of the patients arm.

On at least one occasion the patient had excrement down her nails and on a number of occasions there has been excrement on the hoist and bed.

Throughout her time on the ward we have asked that we are kept informed on our daily visits and that she is treated with dignity and respect but this is still not happening and she is beginning to regress.

My hope is that someone does actually take notice of this review and act on the comments for the patients' welfare.
