"The standard of cleaning has fallen"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

(as a relative),

I run a cleaning company and am responsible for the cleaning of very many health centres, schools, offices and so on. For the last 10 years I have been a regular visitor to Treliske as I have two elderly aunts who live in Cornwall and use your facilities regularly - they have nothing but praise for their medical care. We visited the hospital recently visiting Tower and the Trelawney entrance.

I have always paid attention to the standard of cleaning because it is my profession and I have to say that the standard of cleaning has fallen dramatically since the Trust took the decision to outsource it's cleaning. The walk from Tower to the front entrance was strewn with dust balls and skid marks, this floor has not been cleaned properly for weeks. The stairs by the chemist were being cleaned, I have to say I have never seen a set of stairs left so wet in a public area, there was no wet floor sign at the base of the stairs. The reason that the stairs were so wet was because the cleaner was hand wringing the mop into a plastic bag on top of the cleaning trolley! The possibilities for cross infection are endless as the cleaner continues around the hospital. Do you have an infection control team? If so how can they condone this method of wringing out a mop?

The public toilets in Trelawney wing by outpatients then revealed something even worse! In my 40 years of working in the industry I have never seen a toilet as bad, it appears the company had not been using chemicals to clean.

The dismal seating area that used to be the excellent Coffee Corner - this floor has not been cleaned for months, it is difficult to tell what colour it should be! This is the main entrance to the hospital where first impressions are made, how on earth can the Trust Board condone this what does it say about the rest of the hospital?

Finally I have always admired the mural as it is a very attractive feature and I always sympathised with the cleaners as it looks difficult to keep clean, it always was as I used to check whilst waiting for my aunt, I would ask you to run your finger over it, but wear gloves as it will come back with black thick dust.

Why oh why did the coffee shop stop using crockery? When I sat there, there were piles of cardboard cups all over the tables which were sticky as well what s horrible introduction to the hospital. These are not one offs.

My question is how can this be allowed to continue in a hospital? Would be interested to see if anything happens as a result of my comments the next time I visit.

I have some images that I would like to attach but cannot see how.

Concerned, scared and upset.

Dear Clean Freak,

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns and I want you to know that we take any comments about the standard of cleaning of the hospital very seriously.

I will stress that Mitie are contracted to provide domestic services to NHS standards which are our measures of performance. All areas within the hospital are subject to periodic audits by the Trust against these standards, and the cleanliness of the hospital is included in inspections by outside authorities such as the Care Quality Commission.

To provide you with a full answer to all your points could you contact me via the email details below and I will investigate on your behalf?

Kind regards

Claire Billing
