"Exemplary care and smiles"

About: Princess Royal University Hospital (Orpington)

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2018 and within a month I had a mastectomy, followed by chemo and radiotherapy(At Queen Mary hosp). . Every single member of staff, receptionists, radiographers, nurses, chemo team in Chartwell, phlebotomy ladies, breast nurse team, doctors and surgeons, in PRUH and day care centre nxt door, have been excellent. Nothing too much trouble. Always ready with a smile and hug if needed. Always extremely busy, but never ever rushing anyone.

My surgery was day care, and i must thank the nurse there for his care, especially as I was discharged feeling less than great!

I was attended every day for a couple of weeks afterwards at home, by an excellent home care team....these ladies were my rocks after devastating surgery for a woman, and kept me positive and well in the recovery period.

My surgeon was wonderful....he talked me through everything, explained things clearly, answered my questions, never rushed my appts, and even came out to see me after my surgery when one of the home care nurses shared her concerns. He treated me like an individual, remembered my concerns, and took time to allay my fears rationally. He visited me at least 3x in the afternoon after my morning surgery and spoke to me each time....really excellent bedside manner and so reassuring.

My breast nurse liaised with oncologists to allow me a holiday b4 chemo started. I felt this was really evidence of listening to my wishes, balancing them with my medical needs and working to ensure both were met. Result was to start chemo in a much more positive frame of mind. Thank you.

Chemo team in Chartwell really are angels. Dreadfully overworked most of the time, yet never without a friendly smile, an arm around the shoulder on dark days, and endless laughter to lighten what could be a gloomy place to spend a day otherwise. Debbie deserves a particular mention but everyone was marvellous.

I now continue my recovery, still an outpatient, but made to feel like family. What could be the most traumatic year of my life has been made so much more bearable by the wonderful care I have received at PRUH.

Thank you seems inadequate but it is so sincere. God bless.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us about your experience of care for your breast cancer at the Princess Royal.

I have passed your comments onto the Head of Nursing who I know will wish to share with staff.

With all good wishes from King's.
