"Good, timely care from cancer services and GP"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Oncology St Michael's Hospital / General surgery Stennack Surgery

(as a service user),

Written by Healthwatch Cornwall on behalf of the story provider:

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. The GP referral (Stennack Surgery) was very speedy, the staff are always good and it's always possible to see the doctor of choice. Stennack referred me to the Mermaid Centre at Treliske. The service here was very good too, consultants and nurses. I had a lumpectomy at St Michael's, Hayle in June 2015 and the service was very good. I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the Headlands - receiving 6 monthly injections and bone infusions (the last of which is next month). I was at at Treliske following a GP referral last week (Penzance - Rosemellyn Surgery). The letter from Treliske following the referral came only 2 days later for an investigation for possible bowel cancer. I have no complaints whatsoever. I feel I have had very good care. I do think that it is difficult to get to Treliske (I'm a resident in Penwith). I live alone but I manage.

Dear blackcrow

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback for the services you have had need to receive treatment from at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) since 2015. My name is Michaela and I work within the Patient and Family Experience Team here at RCHT; part of my role is to read all feedback we receive on here and share with the relevant staff. Firstly, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you.

I will be sharing your kind words and praise with the teams in the Mermaid Centre and Headland Unit as well as St Michaels Hospital as I know they will be delighted to know that they provided you with a very good service. I will also share with the Bowel Cancer team as you mention that you received a letter for an appointment with them within 2 days of your GP referral.

I am happy that you have no complaints whatsoever with the care and am sorry that it can be difficult to attend Treliske due to where you live. Please do contact the relevant departments direct if you really do begin to struggle, to see if your appointments can be held closer to home, perhaps at West Cornwall Hospital. I know that our services are trying to offer this to our patients (treatment allowing) wherever possible.

Thank you again for sharing your feedback.

With kind regards

Michaela Brewer, Patient Experience Coordinator
