"Voice disorder"

About: Castle Hill Hospital

I have had a voice disorder now for over two years that requires immense strain and effort to speak and soreness and discomfort in my throat when I talk making life very miserable for myself. I had a number of appointments with ENT surgeons at Castle Hill and a course of voice therapy with a speech & language therapist. I would like to say that a vast majority of the staff are very pleasant and caring people who really wanted me to get better. However, I will say this because the surgeons could not see nothing with the endoscope and a stroboscopy instead of fully believing unfortunately for me because I have aspergers and slight anxiety and depression they assumed it was all psychological and that I am thinking about my voice problem to much and one of the surgeons as lovely as they where also felt my aspergers could be making my voice problem worse. As a result of this the ENT surgeons referred me to a psychologist, psychotherapist and psychological medicine which when the problem is not actually in your head it hurts because it felt like I was getting called crazy in the end. Then after I was discharged I realised I could not return any more to Castle Hill as they where not willing to help me any more. So, I tried to get on with my life but this was going to be impossible as the strain and effort and pain in my throat when I talk is so bad that I struggle to talk with family and friends nevermind get a job. Therefore, I was not prepared to give up hope and live like this for the rest of my life not at the young age I am. I wanted to get to the bottom what is wrong with my voice so I researched ENT surgeons who specialise in voice disorders. And I found a surgeon in Manchester and it was private and it cost my parents quite a bit of money. However, given my circumstances it was worth a shot. So, I travelled to Manchester and the surgeon looked at my vocal cords and throat very throughly with a stroboscopy and he was able to give me a diagnosis. Not just that though a treatment that may work obviously nothing is 100% but for the first time in a very long time I felt hope and a chance of getting my life back which would give me a good quality of life and a future to look forward to.
