"Very bad my friend was an acute abdomen"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

What I liked

when the doctor eventually came he was very appologetic about the time we waited for my friend to be seen, this was because the doctor who should have reviewed her went home at 17:30 hours we were still waiting in A/E at 21:00 hours.

What could be improved

i took my friend, who was suffering from acute abdominal pain to the A/E dept of this this hospital,(she had been referred there from Grindon Walk in Centre.

We waited 90minutes before she was called to triage despite me telling the receptionist that my friend was in acute pain and near to collapsing.

When she was called in she was taken to the green waiting area in the department where she waited nearly 90 minutes again before being seen by the A/E doctor, when she was seen the doctor referred her to see the Consultant in A/E, she was referred at approx 1730 hours, at 21;00 hours the nurse practioner went to see where the Consultant was, he had gone home!.

My friend was eventually seen at 21:30 hours by the A/E Registrar, we were in the department for eight and half hours in total!

We are sorry that you experienced such a wait at our A&E Department, at some times the Department can be extremely busy but we do try to see our patients in a timely manner and we are sorry that this was not the case for your friend. If you would like to contact us at corporate.affairs@chsft.nhs.uk, we can further investigate your complaint.
