"Cancellation of appointments for paediatrician"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Adult Speech and Language Therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

My son is being assessed for autism, last year he attended speech and language in Airdrie health centre. At his last appointment we were told it was now a matter of waiting on a paediatrician appointment.

We were sent a letter with an appointment time for November, this appointment time was changed slightly but was still the same date. On the morning of this appointment I got a phonecall to say the appointment was cancelled and a new appointment would be sent out.

The next appointment was for January, a few days before this appointment I received a letter again cancelling the appointment. I contacted community paediatrics and asked when we would receive a new appointment and was told the paediatrician had hurt themselves and that's why the appointment was cancelled. I told them I needed a rough idea when we would have a new appointment as I would be contacting my local MP or MSP. I was then told they were trying to fit my son in with a different paediatrician and he would have an appointment for February, tomorrow is February and we still have no new appointment three weeks after the second cancellation.

Change causes meltdowns in my son and this is a big year for him with a lot of change as he will have two new schools to attend within weeks of each other as his primary school is amalgamating in may and then he goes to high school in August bringing with it new classrooms, new teachers, new children, new rules, etc, so I'm verging on desperate to ensure he will have the support he needs within the schools when the time comes

Dear Joshtaiben,

I am sorry to hear of your delay and the number of cancelations which you and your son have received. I have spoken to my colleague who manages the admin staff who appoint the clinics. If you contact 01698 456249 tomorrow morning (staff member is part time), Gail the secretary will after speaking to the relevant Paediatrician, be able to give you an indication of the date of your appointment.

NHS Lanarkshire is in the process of reviewing the pathway for children with neurological conditions including Autism and Asperger's and hope to have a more streamlined diagnostic service available in the near future.

If you do not get a satisfactory outcome, please come back to me on 01355597437.

Regards

Jim Murray
