"good care but discharge disgraseful"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

What I liked

My father was taken to A and E at the weekend with a suspected mini stroke. The staff were excellent and the level of care was very good. He was then transferred to ward 22 for observation again the staff were of a very high standard and we were very happy with the level of care we received. On the Sunday we were informed at two pm that my father was well enough to go home. We would have to wait for the doctor to sign my fathers script before discharge. We were told that the doctor would be coming around soon. We were told on numerous occasions that the doctor was in fact on her way. We finally received the script at seven o clock that night. My father was in a emotionally frail state of mind and physically drained, this waiting caused both of my parents a great deal of unwarranted stress. The doctor did not even come in and see my father but sent an auxiliary nurse in with the script (a list of medication). We waited five hours for something which would in fact have taken a couple of seconds to complete. I realise that it was a weekend and staff will be short but feel it is very important that a procedure is put in place to prevent this situation happening again. That is without even mentioning the car parking charges!!

Thank you for your comments posted on this website regarding the care afforded to your father at North Tyneside General Hospital.

The Trust is very sorry to hear about the length of time your parents had to wait for a prescription to be written as part of your fathers discharge process. Please accept our apologies. I will bring this to the attention of all medical staff and emphasise the need to keep lines of communication open and if there are delays for whatever reason both staff and patients are kept informed. Patient feedback is always appreciated and helps us to monitor our services. Thank you for taking the time to write.
