"If you are ill there's no finer place to be than..."

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary

What I liked

Although this visit was just to Clinic I feel it should be mentioned as it is all part of your treatment. At Clinic I always find the staff most helpful and polite and the Consultant that I see is one of the most considerate and understanding Doctors I have ever met. I have been an inpatient on a few occasions and most of the time found staff to be professional, but still caring, of course there is always one or two who don't seem to pull there weight but you get this in any place that employs the number of people that MRI employs.

I would also like to give praise to the Physiotherapist's who visit the wards and the after care at Pulmonary Rehabilitation, they all do a fine job.

What could be improved

In general you do look around for things that can be improved but with the tight budgets it must be impossible to keep everybody happy.

One area I did notice needed attention was the cleaning of the wards; the cleaning staff would wipe down all the surfaces, then proceed to mop the floors with water that looked as though it had just come out of the canal, when dry the floor was a mass of streaks and no cleaner. Under the bed opposite me there was an empty crisp packet which the cleaners managed to miss for five days, it was only picked up (by a nurse) when the patient and bed were being moved to another ward.

Anything else?

I know it's always open season on Hospital food, but I have to mention it; over the years it has improved and what I had in MRI was al right. I'm a big bloke and the portions left a lot to be desired, there is a good varied menu but never enough, also it could do with being kept a little warmer.

I did notice on a couple of occasion patients who are very poorly having the following days order

filled out for them, and when it arrives they don't want it so that meal is then thrown away. There is an awful lot of waste on the catering side.

People have to have a moan about Hospitals, it's only human nature, but may I just take this opportunity to say thank you to Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapist and all staff. Thank You.

Thank you for your comments posted on the NHS Choices website regarding your care. It was very kind of you to write and compliment the staff and to provide us with such constructive and helpful feedback. Your comments regarding the cleanliness of the ward and meal provision have been forwarded to Sodexo, who provide these services to the Trust for their consideration. Sodexo Healthcare strive to work with the Trust to ensure that all areas are maintained in a standard of cleanliness that exceeds expectations and your issue relating to cleaning practice is of considerable concern – they have assured the Trust that they are currently reviewing the standards in all areas and where necessary providing additional training to staff to ensure that they meet the standards expected. On behalf of the Trust, the Assistant Director of Facilities would like to apologise that you had a poor experience in terms of cleanliness on the wards and will continue to investigate this further with Sodexo.
