About: Fordingbridge Hospital Salisbury District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Yeovil District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

In 2017 I was advised by Salisbury Hospital that both my hips were badly worn and would require surgery for replacement.

They could not operate as Salisbury is in Wiltshire and I live in Hampshire, apparently new rules imposed by NHS choices. This totally ignores the fact that my post code is A Salisbury post code.

Eventually the specialist at Salisbury referred me to another hospital early in 2019 and I received a letter inviting me to go to Yeovil in Somerset ( 60 miles away)

Which I conformed with and went there on a Monday Morning to be examined by a surgeon who was livid because up to date ex rays were not supplied, and sent me for more ex rays. Next in consultation I was advised that both hips were in need of surgery and asked which I would prefer to be operated on. To which I could not reply as both hips were causing extreme discomfort, so I was asked which one caused most pain. I replied the left and the surgeon put a black line on left thigh and told me to return early that Friday morning. Which I did and was operated on later in the morning.

In January 2019  I attended Hampshire Physio dept in Fordingbridge where the so called physio rammed my left knee up to the chest which caused considerable discomfort. I pointed out to this person that I had just had a hip replacement and that action was not correct as per instructions from Yeovil.

The answer I received was that this staff member didn't know anything about it, and it had nothing to do with them.

I advised this person to leave me alone before I responded in a manner that would not be acceptable.

I called Yeovil to question the treatment and was was advised that this was not good and asked if I wanted to visit for a check. due to problems in travelling such a distance, I asked if it in order to continue with exercise and if no improvement would contact them, Which they agreed to.

Since then it has been a slow process, because my balance has been greatly affected and I started at a balance class which is all well and good, but it is uncomfortable and I know that the hip needs replacing.

Advised my GP who appeared surprised until I pointed out that the practice had a letter from the surgeon stating that both hips were in a bad way. GP found letter and left a form for me to have ex ray on right hip, unfortunately I was put down for left hip ex ray ( the one already replaced). Not a problem because I can advise ex ray specialist accordingly.

Now NHS choices write to me cancelling an appointment which I had never been advised about.

Now I wonder what  NHS choices is about apart from empire building and wasting essential funds that could be better allocated to area that has more need. Am absolutely disgusted with this new way of operating. Makes one feel if paying National Health all your life is in fact a waste of time and money.
