I broke my toe helping a friend about 24 miles from home. The local Minor Injuries Unit was excellent and i was able to leave within an hour, X-rayed and injuries dressed. I was told to attend my local Accident Department with a letter to see the local Orthopaedic Clinic. After waiting an hour, I was making a mess on the floor with bleeding and asked what was happening. I was told that the Orthopaedic surgeon on duty would not see me because the Minor Injuries Unit had not spoken to him and told him about me. Fortunately, someone recognised me and made sure that I was attended to.
The care since then by the nurses, A&E doctors, radiographers and Orthopaedic surgeons has been excellent. I was very impressed that this morning I was handed the X-ray form as I arrived in Fracture Clinic, seen as soon as I returned for the dressing and was reviewed by a doctor with no delay. The nurses have all been very gentle as they have handled my toe and explained things very clearly.
However, only the A&E registrar said "hello my name is" and most people have not worn badges or badges that I could read.
