"Lack of care"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Gastroenterology

(as a service user),

I am under the care of Glasgow’s Royal Children’s Hospital and the IBD + Gastrointestinal team. I live in the outer hebrides (400 miles from them). & the IBD nurses have not provided their care promised to me during our first phone call (1 year ago) to the extent that I don’t expect any sort of messages or phone calls from them at all.

Some examples of this include; leaving an email regarding my extreme pain and lack of sleep whilst on the modulen diet for over two weeks before I received a reply& missing or being late for phone calls by several HOURS & when I was first hospitalised through a & e I was phoned and I sobbed to a particular nurse about how isolated from my care support I felt and I was promised WEEKLY emails and phone calls...I haven’t had a phone call or email to ask how things are for months & I can appreciate that it must be difficult to work with someone so far away however it’s their job & I have completely given up any sort of hope for them and feel even more isolated than before. I feel that the people who’s job it is to check up on me don’t care enough to even email me for over 8 weeks.

Dear julietgs56

Thank you for getting in touch via Care Opinion.

I am sorry to hear that you have been having such a difficult time over the last year. As you say it can be difficult for patients and their families who are accessing specialist services which are based a long way from where they live. We would still expect, however, that you receive the communications and support that you need and have been agreed with your clinical team.

We would like to look at your circumstances in more detail and ensure that you and the team can go forward in a way that meets your needs. We will need some more information in order to do this. If you are happy to do so can you contact me at pamela.mcgoldrick@ggc.scot.nhs.uk and I will let you know what additional information we need.

I look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes

Pam
