"Fab doctors, poor supporting staff with too..."

About: Leighton Hospital

The doctors caring for my son could not be faulted, they had honest empathy and treated each case with importance regardless of the reason for being there. Unfortunately this is let down by the nursing and supporting staff who are too big for their boots and even question the doctors judgement In front of us. Following admittance from a&e my son had drastically improved as a result of the excellent work the paramedics and a&e staff had put in. As the ward staff had not seen how severe my son's case was he was dismissed and our views were not taking into account. The staff serving and preping food speak to one of the staff like a child, they are rude and treat them like an idiot, it must be so embarrassing and I'm surprised they've not left. 2 of the nursing staff made a rude comment about my son not going to sleep until 5 am, not considering his young age, being poked and prodded every 2 hrs, a new environment and being without his dad. Quite frankly they all except the doctors need to do some thinking before they open their mouths, and consider the impact their opinion has on people. your too scared to say anything because they either unprofessionally argue with you or ask you to leave. They kept telling us the criteria for discharging my son, then when he didn't reach their target they discharged us early and told us there is a new policy that not everyone knows about (We must look like we were born yesterday!) I would also not like to be told they are going to refer you to one department one minute then change their minds the next, just say nothing! The staff also shared their opinions about other patients openly in front of other patients and parents, I wondered what they would be saying about us! Then leaving to receive a letter saying our admittance was mild, they should review what was written earlier in a&e which was servere, unfortunately that makes you feel that your admittance was inconvenient for them!

Thank you for taking the time to post on NHS choices.

I am sorry to hear of your experience on CAU.

I have discussed your concerns with staff on the unit and also ways that we can improve on communication.

I would expect all staff to treat patients and parents with respect, and behave in a professional manner at all times. I would like to apologise again for your experience, and reassure you that these issues have been dealt with appropriately.

If you could like to discuss this with me further please contact me via the customer care team on 01270 612410
