"Potential miscarriage"

About: Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

I am 9 weeks pregnant and have had 3 previous miscarriages I have been bleeding for 2 days so I called 111 and got a callback from a doctor telling me to go to A&E so they could give me an ultrasound to check on my pregnancy. On arrival I was seen quickly by the lovely nurse who took bloods etc then waited a few hours for the gynaecologist once she came she read my notes and I asked if I could have a ultrasound as per my conversation with the doctor on the phone she told me I could only have an internal examination I said I didn't want one as that can cause miscarriage (if I'm not already having one) she got very defensive and told me that an ultrasound can also cause miscarriage and I am only going for a scan if I bleed for another 2 days because they can't send everyone for a scan that's bleeding a little bit and she won't be told how to do her job because she's the one who's medically trained! She said the internal will allow her to see my cervix and see where I was bleeding from I explained again that I am very stressed and anxious and I really didn't want to risk an internal examination at this stage I was absolutely shocked and upset at her stern horrible attitude I started to cry and she left the room saying I'll give you a minute to make your decision it's an internal examination or I'll give you a number to call in 2 days. The lack of empathy was unbelievable given the circumstances I will now have a sleepless night praying I can find a private clinic with availability for an ultrasound tomorrow morning when she simply could have sent me for an ultrasound and we would have then known if I was miscarrying or not.

I am sorry that you had that experience and would normally offer an ultrasound at our Early pregnancy unit during the daytime (9am-4pm). If you are seen outside of these hours we would arrange for you to come as soon as possible which is normally the next day. Please contact our lead for Matron for Gynaecology, Kim Attley on 01536 492916 to discuss your experience further and arrange a scan for you.
