No point in me spending any more time trying to call PALS to complain as they dont answer. Absolutely disgusted with the procedure and level of service provided in Children's A&E last night. My son was referred to A&E the previous day with sever abdominal pains, was examined had bloods and urine checked then discharged with a diagnosis of inflammation of the lymph nodes in his stomach. Prescribed gaviscone and paracetamol. By the next day his symptoms were worsening, called the gp again in the afternoon and they advised us to return to A&E. He was seen by triage just as the shift was changing and was not then seen again by anyone until over 6 hours later. I complained on 3 occasions and was told that because my son had been seen by a surgeon the day before we need to wait for a surgeon to become available before he is looked at. 6 hours sitting in a waiting room is a long time for any child, but it is even more stressful for a child that has Autism - which the triage highlighted in his notes. The temperature in the room was overbearing and the place was filthy due to grit being brought in from outside. At one point he wantedcto start cleaning the room and tried to pick up the discarded vomit trays When he started to have a meltdown we were told that we could use the parents room which is basically a small room with two plastic chairs and a sink. I requested again that my son was examined by an A&E Dr as the surgeon only examined him yesterday to rule out appendicitis so we knew that it was not a surgical matter but the A&E Dr/refused to examine him. Eventually after 7 hours druing the early hours of this morning the Surgeon (who was exceptionally kind and helpful) examined my son and stated, there is no reason that your son needed to be assessed by Surgical department and needs to be seen by the Paediatric A&E Dr! - the same thing that I had requested 6 hours earlier. Finally the Dr examined my son and diagnosed him with Peptic ulcers and gave him a prescription and treatment. Thanks for that, im sure the stress that waiting in a waiting room for 7 hours has really done wonders for an ulcer. If possible, never again will I take my child to this A&E. I am so disappointed and upset for my son.
