I attended Basildon Hospital for a prearranged blood test today. I have a massive phobia of injections and needles; this review is aimed at all those like me.
Initially I was frustrated as the Hospital website does not have directions to the area you need to attend because when you have a fear you want to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. It was however easy; if you park in the car park (£3 for the first hour) and walk through outpatients (signed) the reception can point the way (it’s also signed Pathology in the hospital).
There is a digital screen to sign in. You take a place in the waiting area which has a toilet, water machine and plenty of seating. There is a screen which tells you which bay to go in and when. The bays are actually little rooms with doors so if you are scared or likely to fight your way out (like me) they can shut the door for privacy and dignity.
In the bay (little room) is a comfortable chair with a pillow, a desk, sink and all the nurses equipment. The bays are quite small so if you want someone to come with you they will have to stand facing you. This was the first time I haven’t had someone with me for an injection/ needle and I’m pleased it was just me and the phlebotomist.
My phlebotomist was really kind and understanding of my phobia. She offered me tissues and water whilst I was crying. I couldn’t fault her ‘bedside’ manner; she was professional and compassionate. I was treated with dignity throughout despite being hysterical. She offered to talk me through what was going to happen (I chose not to know the detail) and used numbing spray on my arm so that I didn’t jump when she inserted the needle. She spoke to me the entire time the blood was being taken about anything that was not the procedure. I have had no bruises from having my blood taken and no soreness.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Basildon Hospital for a blood test; especially if you have a phobia.
