After my brother attempted suicide my family rushed to ED to be with him. As he is 29, no one would talk to us about the situation or even inform us of what was going on. They moved him to MAU without even informing us - we just followed down the corridor. After assessments he was allowed to go home, with no psychiatric evaluation and not even told about what medication he could and couldn’t take. He was informed to call Samaritans if he felt like that again. Again, staff wouldn’t tell us anything, I accept that he’s an adult - however this is clearly a situation that proves he was not in the correct mindset. No one informed us on how to monitor him or support him or what to do next. When we left he was wobbly on his legs and couldn’t answer simple questions. We’re onviously horrified by the whole ordeal and confused as to why we weren’t offered any support or advice - especially as we were the ones who found him - traumatic to say the least. No one in my immediate family has been able to sleep properly since and I don’t understand how in 2019 we cannot have a conversation about mental health with families as it directly affects our lives too. We’re at a loss with what to do next.
