"Day surgery-fusion of bone in toe due to arthritis"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I elected for a spinal as I’m terrified of the thought of a general; I know 2 people who had bad reactions to a general anaesthetic s.

That being said I’m nearly as terrified of a spinal, I hate blood, and hate being out of control of my own body; so pretty pathetic!

So when the cannula was inserted I felt myself fainting, feeling sick and bluntly terrified- secretly I think my heart will stop( I watch the blood pressure and heart monitor all the time).

The two anaesthetist were fabulous, talking to me taking care of me, distracting me with conversation. They continued to chat to me through the procedure to keep me calm. Still honest with what they were doing and what next. This made me trust them implicitly, helping me to relax just a little.

I thought they were lovely they did more than their job.

Now you might think that was their job, well Ive had practice nurses that are less considerate when I have a blood test. I tell them I’ll become light headed and faint, they tell me not to be ridiculous, so yes these guys did ease my situation and I feel very grateful!
