"Broken Clavicle"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

In September 2018 I had a bad crash on my road bike. A pheasant got caught up in my bike when I was travelling at speed down a steep hill. I went over the handle bars and landed on my shoulder. I broke my collar bone into 3 pieces and was told that surgery may be required. I also had a badly bruised and cut hip. This was termed a high velocity injury.

2 weeks later I had an x ray and the surgeon told me that it was too early and to come back in another 4 weeks. I came back and had another x ray ...which looked like the first ....no bone union and looked a mess to be honest. I had very poor movement in my arm and was referred to a physio.

On week 7 after my accident I went to see a physio. I was given basic exercises. With little progress I went back a few weeks later and was about to be sent home with more exercises when I told the physio that something wasn't right. Another physio was brought in who quickly diagnosed a frozen shoulder.  I went back again to the surgeon a few weeks later and looked at new x rays ...which again looked the same ...no bone union. The surgeon said that they thought that it was healing (guessing) but a CT scan would be required.

After a 3 to 4 weeks wait I got a CT scan. After a week,  I phoned Ninewells and they have told me that results are on their way and I will have an appointment in the new year. I was unhappy with this so phoned up and got an appointment for mid December.

The surgeon told me that there was no bone union and that I had two options. 1/ Wait and see. 2/ surgery. I went for the surgery option. I left Ninewells feeling really happy and upbeat as I was told that I was on the "urgent" list for surgery and it could happen very quickly. I was also told that I was on the cancellation list for surgery.

I phoned a week later as I had not heard anything and after a few emails and phone calls , I  was told that my form had gone missing. My surgeons lovely secretary made out a new one and sent it to pre assessment. I had my pre assessement in late Dec and they told me that info would be scanned in that day.

I phoned AGAIN in mid Jan as I had not heard anything and was told that pre assessment had not passed on info yet. I phoned PA and they told me that they were waiting for results of tests. The test they carried out was a blood test ...taken in mid Dec and three weeks later ......results were still not sent through!!!

What is happening at Ninewells? My experience so far has been really really poor. I just want to get on with my life.

I was a very active person until I had my accident. I did duathlons, triathlons, running races, I ran , cycled and swam every week.  I can now run a few Kms and can only cycle at the gym ....both activities causing pain. I teach Pilates and I am self employed and I had to take time off unpaid due to my accident. I cannot teach many of the Pilates moves as I cannot use my bodyweight and it hurts when I lift my arm/use my shoulder.

In Conclusion, can someone please please listen to my story and help me get a resolution to a very long and painful process. Thats now 4 months after my accident and I still have a badly broken collar bone as well as a frozen shoulder. Can the NHS / Ninewells help me ?
