"Disgusting treatment of a baby and new mum"

About: Scunthorpe General Hospital

After distressing my newborn with eye drops and prising his eyes open I took my baby outside to the waiting room and started to discreetly breast feed him to calm him. A nurse, Dorine, promptly came over and pointed at the disabled toilet and said do you want to go some where more private? I told her no because I'm not feeding my baby in a toilet I'm sure she doesn't eat her lunch in a toilet. She replied by saying that I need to cover up then because there are men about and they won't like it. I am shocked an appauled. Surely in 2018 and in a hospital of all places a mum should be able to feed her distressed baby wherever she wants. I am going to take this further but want people to be aware just how breastfeeding mums are treated by so called health professionals.

Good evening. Please accept my sincere apologies for your experience. We, as a Trust embrace breastfeeding mothers and would always want to support anyone wanting to breastfeed their babies, either as a patient, visitor or staff member.

I will share your feedback with our maternity team but if you would like to discuss this further please contact me via our Patient Advice and Liaison department on 03033 306518 or email: nlg-tr.PALS@nhs.net

Thank you

Hello,

Just to update you I have spoken with the matron for the area, who is going to speak to the staff directly. We have been in touch with our maternity team to obtain some new posters to be displayed within the department, promoting breastfeeding, and some information for staff around breastfeeding and the support they can give.

Thank you for raising the issue, your feedback will help make a positive change.

Kind Regards

Jo Loughborough
