"Knee Arthroscopy - ADSU"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

i attended the adult day sugary Unit for a knee arthroscopy and trimming of a torn cartilage. I had twisted my knee back in the summer playing social cricket and the pain hadn’t settled despite physio and a steroid injection. In the last month my knee had started locking in a bent position the worst of which took an hour to straighten, so I saw the Consultant knee surgeon. He reviewed my MRI scan and examined me explaining the reason for the locking and the rationale behind keyhole arthroscopy surgery to look at the state of the torn cartilage and trim it back to stop it flapping around. He was excellent in every way, calm and reassuring. He met me again on the day of the surgery and we went through things again, I signed the consent form and he marked my leg with an arrow. I also met the Consultant anaesthetist. She was very kind and put me at ease regarding the general anaesthetic. She explained what would happen going off to sleep but also how I would feel afterwards waking up in recovery and what I would need to take in terms of pain killers. The nursing staff on the ward were also excellent a Sister came to say hello and , Senior staff nurse checked me in. A staff member took me down to the theatre complex. There was a chap checking me in in the anaesthetiic room and helping the Dr put me to sleep. I had a drip put in my left hand and some sleepy medicine made me feel woozy. I then was asked to breeth some oxygen from the mask and that’s all I remember. The next thing I woke up in recovery with the recovery nurse looking after me. My knee was bandaged up and I was told the op took half an hour. Both the consultant and anaesthetist came to see me in recovery to check I was ok. I went back to the day ward and slept for a bit before a staff member checked me over and I had gone to the loo. My knee had local anaesthetic inside and felt fine. My wife picked me up and I was able to walk out to the car. I had a sheet of exercises to follow which I have done today and I’ve reduced the crepe bandage as instructed. I’ve been arranged an appointment to see the consultant in the next few weeks. In summary the care I received was outstanding in every way. Our NHS is staffed by incredibly kind, caring staff who looked after me brilliantly. They were professional, efficient and the ward was clean.
