(as a parent/guardian),

We attended Douglas Street Community Health Clinic in Hamilton for an out of hours appointment for my Son as he was very unwell.

When Dr Coates came into reception to call him, we were extremely surprised to see that he used Makaton to help him understand what was happening. My son is highly Autistic and Dr Coates was outstanding in keeping him calm, and talking to him (at the same time using Makaton) throughout the examination. He even gave a fidget cube to focus on as he was examining his ears, this was perfect as he is normally very difficult during examinations.

All in all, we would like to thank Dr Coates for his outstanding service and understanding of Autism. Hopefully more Health Professionals will undertake Makaton training.

Thank you for giving such positive feedback on the service,

I will pass on your comments to Dr Coates and willl share you comments about the use of Makaton and how this helped during the consultation with other staff in the Out of Hour service.

I hope your son has now fully recovered.
