Today I visited the Bobby Moore unit , having been referred by my GP for exploration of a breast problem. I was impressed by the speed of my appointment. I visited my GP one day and next morning got a phone call offering me this appointment less than 2 weeks away.
Naturally, over Christmas, I was apprehensive about what might be found. The nurse who showed me to the examination room could not have been kinder and was clearly aware I might be apprehensive and did her utmost to help me relax. The referral letter from my GP didn't seem to be on the system, so I was left waiting for some time-but the nurses kept coming back to apologise for the delay and ensure I was OK. Eventually I was seen by the consultant, examined, reassured by him that nothing seemed amiss but he would double-check that by offering me a mammogram. The radiographer was also extremely kind and thoughtful-and very professional, explaining in detail what was happening and checking that I didn't feel too uncomfortable. In no time at all I was sent back to the Bobby Moore Unit clutching the results of my mammogram, which had been checked by a radiographer. I again saw the same consultant and was given the all-clear, which was a huge relief, of course. It was explained that a second radiographer will look at the mammogram to make double-sure and a letter confirming the result will be sent to me.
I was so impressed by the kindness of each and every member of staff with whom I came into contact today. They put me at my ease and, had my results indicated the need to treatment I feel that I would have left the hospital knowing that I was in very good hands indeed. Thank you, Stepping Hill, and thank you, NHS. I am deeply grateful.Janet Phillips
