"Our experience with the Childrens ward"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Children's Ward Forth Valley Royal Hospital / GP Out of Hours

(as a parent/guardian),

I would just like to praise all the staff on FVRH Childrens ward for the care we recieved this week.  We were there with our 3 year old daughter who has been having bowel and bladder problems.  When we arrived on the ward she was very distressed and anxious as she has had numerous blood test over the past year and as a result can become very nervous in a hospital setting, this coupled with the pain she was in made it a very difficult and frustrating time for us a parents. The nurses and Dr were amazing.  They gained my daughters trust and within the 3 hours we were there she went from not letting anyone near her to letting the Dr do a thorough examination. We left with a plan in place and reassurances.  Thank you all so much.

However, Our admission to the childrens ward was from Out of Hours service at FVRH.  We were seen by a nurse practioner.  My daughter was upset ,aggitated, nervous throughout the consultation.  After speaking with the paeds team the nurse told us to go to the childrens ward.  As we left they suggested if she had been our 1st child we wouldnt have had anymore.  How very unprofessional and what a way to talk of a 3 year old child who has presented the way she did.  I found this very upsetting and added to our already distressed mood. My daughter is 3 years old and is terrified of any sort of health setting.  Thank god for the nurses and Drs in the childrens ward!  They were far from judgemental, they looked after us and put a smile back on my daughters face.

Delighted with the childrens ward, but very disappointed and upset with the comment made about my daughter by the Nurse in out of hours.

Dear Parents (thechoufs)

I hope your little girl is recovering well from her recent illness. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.

Hospital can be a very frightening and overwhelming place for a child, especially for one so small, and also for you as parents. All of the Children’s Ward team are very aware of this and work extremely hard at alleviating these fears and anxieties by giving the best possible care that helps support the individual childs needs. It is great to hear that their care and kindness helped make your little girls' experience a better one and that as parents you were happy with the care and on-going plans.

I have shared your feedback with the team and they would like to thank you for your positive comments. They send their best wishes to you all.

I am sure that the Out of Hours Team will also respond.

Once again many thanks for your fantastic feedback and I wish your little girl a continued speedy recovery.

Kindest regards

Gail

Dear The Choufs

As professional lead for advanced nursing practice in Forth Valley, I am very sorry to hear that you have had a distressing experience involving a nurse practitioner. Advanced Nurse Practitioners are embedded into nursing governance structures, with clear lines of responsibility and accountability therefore, with your permission, I would like to investigate the source of any unprofessional comments that were made. To do this I will require further information and I would be very grateful if you could contact me by e-mail sharon.oswald@nhs.net to arrange a time when we can do this.
