"Left in pain and still waiting"

About: Queen Victoria Hospital (East Grinstead)

Referred to Queen Vic for wisdom tooth removal as dentist and St Faiths couldn’t and wouldn’t remove impacted wisdom tooth due to ‘nerve being too close and too risky’. I have severe dental anxiety as it is (MDAS score of 25) and Waited 3 months for a consultation to have the first cancelled, and the second cancelled the day before. Phoned up and explained I have a job and can’t keep being mucked about because the hospital ‘oversubscribed’ a surgery (which frankly isn’t my fault and is a problem you should be dealing with). Once I eventually got any appointment 2.5 weeks after original cancelled appointment I was told the same thing over and over that I’d been told 3-6 months prior by the dentist. Had CT which I can’t fault the staff for who were completely lovely.

Went back to Maxfax a week after CT to be told ‘we can do the surgery but it’s a wait of between 6 weeks to 6 months’. I’ve been left in severe pain with my tooth, jaw ache, ear ache, headaches and swelling of the area since February 2018, I’ve had 3 rounds of antibiotics and got to the point Over the counter codeine didn’t even work to eradicate the pain anymore. It was only when I broke down and said I can’t take the pain, sleepless nights due to pain (for 10 months now!!!!) anymore was I actually beginning to be taken seriously by the consultant. She prescribed dihydrocodeine for pain which barely even touches it.

Because of the huge delays by my personal dentist (which has been raised with them) and the Queen Victoria I now face losing the molar next to the impacted wisdom tooth Which my personal dentist won’t do a filing on until the wisdom tooth is removed.

I used to highly rate the Queen Victoria but frankly the service received in this instance has left me more than disappointed and fed up - let alone not helped my dental anxiety one bit. If I had the money to go private I would definitely consider this, but in all honesty I’d rather put myself In debt to go private at this point just to not be in pain after being left to my own devices by the Queen Victoria and my personal dentist.

I’m still waiting for a letter to confirm when this surgery will be. And I remain to have sleepless nights, unbearable pain and haven’t had anything other than soft food for 11 months (try eating just soup and soft food for nearly a year).

My dog got better treatment going to the vet for a tooth issue then I’ve had this whole experience.

Dear Anonymous

I was concerned to read of your experience in regard to the amount of time that you have been waiting for treatment. It would be important to be able to understand what has happened on this occasion and to look into the issues that you have reported. This is not the experience that we aim to provide.

Please could you contact me via the following e-mail address qvh.pals@nhs.net and include your full name and date of birth to enable me to progress this.

I await hearing from you.

Kind regards

Nicolle Ferguson, Patient Experience Manager
