"Very poor and disheartening."

About: Stafford Hospital

What I liked

Some of the staff were really friendly towards my grandparent who stayed in hospital on the urology ward (mainly the unqualified staff). However even those that were had no time to spend offering care as they were all extremely overstretched.

What could be improved

My Grandparent was being treated for a urine infection and for urinary retention however whilst on the ward he was confused due to delerium from the infection and was not assissted to eat and drink causing him to spill his drink on the floor. As a consequnce of no assistance being given and a lack of supervision or monitoring he slipped on the wet floor when trying to get up and fractured his pelvis as a result.

This resulted in a long hospital stay and considerable pain and rehab which could have been avoided if

1). Staffing levels were adequate enough for the pleseant unqualified staff to assist all their patients with eating and drinking as needed.

2). If the ward was designed better he would also have been within eyesight of a member of staff and if staffing levels were adequate enough for patients to be observed to prevent falls and allow spillages to be cleaned up as they occurred.

3). Due to his period of stay being over the christmas period no rehab staff were available to get him back on his feet and offer the appropriate intervention after his fall and fracture which prolonged his stay.

4). Due to him being an orthopaedic outlier as aresult of his fall and fracture whilst on the urology ward he was not seen by the orthopaedic Dr's in a timely manner and had to wait days befotre he was reviewed and x-rayed.

Anything else?

Being a proud man and not wanting to make a fuss as is the case with most of the older more respectful generation he did not wish to make a formal complaint and therfore i am utilising this fabulous web site in the hope of getting some feedback from Stafford hospital and at least helping the over worked, highly pressurised staff by pointing out the shortcomings of mis management. I also hope that these comments will help other relatives keep a close eye on their loved ones and ensure they are being well looked after whilst at this hospital.

I am very sorry to read about your concerns for your grandfather while he was in our care.

We are working closely with both the hospital’s own and the Age UK volunteers to improve support for our elderly patients with eating, drinking, reading etc.

Your comments have been shared with the surgical matron and she has asked that you do not hesitate to contact her should you wish to discuss your concerns further.
