"Consultant Upper Gastro- dismissive and arrogant"

About: University College Hospital

Having booked a private consultation after digestive, reflux and swallowing issues that had become intolerable, I was pleased the consultant referred me for tests at UCLH as I am already a patient. After rushing through these tests I then however had to wait for 2 months to have the results relayed (would have been 5 months) had I not relentlessly called for a cancellation (as advised by the Dr) Only to be told I am anxious and this must be the root of my issues as I had called his secretary so many times which apparently is not appropriate. The tests were unremarkable, so that is further proof. I have indeed been anxious, I found the lack of information difficult whilst feeling so unwell. I had also been awaiting CT results to check for tumours at my regular gastro's insistence due to iron and weight loss. The consultant implied I had insisted on these and subjected myself to undue radiation, this couldn't be further from the truth, in fact I was extremely reluctant, and was convinced by my gastro that it was medically indicated. I found this Upper gastro appointment embarrassing, condescending, dismissive and uninformative. I am left not knowing if I should continue my current medication, and without any plan from here. I was told a gastro psychiatrist appointment would be sent to me? To address my sensitivities apparently. I have no idea how long that will take. It would have made a massive difference to my anxiety to have my results explained sooner. What is the point in rushing through tests and then having to wait months for the results?? All the while, symptoms continuing. Having worked in the NHS myself, I have never ever spoken to a patient the way that secretary had spoken to me, and I had irate and difficult patients at times. I certainly was always extremely polite which I find is always best no matter the rudeness faced and literally only spoke to her 3 times the entire 2 months? I deliberately tried to avoid her due to her rudeness, misinformation and condescending manner, I stuck to ringing the appointment line. An X ray appointment which I rescheduled was cancelled by their team (NOT at my request), although the secretary argued it was?? I don't know if this influenced the Dr's attitude but he wasn't the caring, attentive one I had after paying half my savings to see him for half an hour. To say you receive the same service on the NHS is laughable, had I paid I would have had results relayed on the same day and I am sure in an informative and courteous manner. On the plus side my regular lower gastro at UCLH has been very good as have the specialist nurses. It seems that anxiety is used as a tool to dismiss patients symptoms, worries. Surprising considering anxiety itself can be a symptom of many diseases and conditions. Attention is given to the lack of mental health funding. It doesn't cost anything to show empathy and respect which would go a long way in reducing patient anxiety as would recieving results in a timely manner.
