The patient was told he only had 1 week to live as cancer had spread through his body. When we went at visiting time one of the house doctor's came into the bay and asked if we wanted to hear about the patient's condition in the bay or in a room. Never dreaming he had cancer, I said in here. The doctor then gave us the horrific news the patient had only 1 week to live. We were so shocked. I felt that the doctor should have said can I have a word with you and given the news somewhere private when it was serious. There were other patients in the bay and I felt it was totally unprofessional giving us that news in front of others.
Over the next few days I asked for an update and the same doctor was so vague and gave me hardly any information, whereas when I asked a Staff Nurse, they explained things very clearly to us. I felt this nurse knew how to talk to us with empathy more than the doctor did. I was very disappointed with the doctor's information, especially when we wanted answers. I felt so bad not knowing what was happening, hence the reason I asked the Staff Nurse. My relative was in pain and my daughter complained and one of the nurses had to get the Charge Nurse to come as my relative was only getting morphine as and when he needed it. After the complaint, the Charge Nurse asked that the syringe driver was given continuously and a higher dose was given.
"A close relative who was dying."
