"Readmission following C section"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Maternity

(as a service user),

Written by Healthwatch Cornwall on behalf of the story provider:

The service user described a good pregnancy with great midwives. Mum was [X} days overdue so came in to be induced. Unfortunately the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck. Staff acted super quickly and she had an emergency C section. Mum was discharged after three days which she felt was too quick. The Community Midwife in  took the dressing off the C Section scar two days after her being discharged. The service user did not think the scar looked good. She was seen on the Day Assessment Unit and given oral antibiotics and discharged. The scar still didn't heal so the she was re-admitted and is on Wheal Fortune (postnatal) for further treatment (antibiotics and special dressing) and is hoping to go home today. The couple feel that she was sent home quicker than she should have been and the discharge on both occasions missed quite a lot.

HI

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

We are sorry you felt your hospital stay was too short but these days most women do go home between one and three days following a Caesarean section. Hospitals are not always the best place to get rest and sleep, especially on a post natal ward where there are many babies to keep the adults awake (even when your baby is sleeping)! If all appears well, usually the best place to get rest is in your own home and bed.

The dressing on your Caesarean scar is put on in operating theatre (which is a sterile environment). It is usually left on for 5 days to give the wound time to heal underneath. Once the dressing was removed and it was noted that your wound was not healing well; the midwife referred you back to the hospital quickly for treatment. This first line of treatment usually works and helps to rid the wound of any infection that may be hindering the healing.

Everybodys skin does heal at different rates, but we are sorry that you then needed further treatment to ensure your wound eventually healed. This situation is quite rare and hopefully you are now on the mend and able to enjoy your baby.

Thank you for your comments and once again, many congratulations,
