"review of appointments system needed and they..."

About: Orchard House Surgery

i had to make an appointment to see a gp, you have to go in on a specific day to make an appointment for the following week.I was informed that our gp's aren't taking appointments, they're only in for emergency call outs and if they request to see you,i couldn't get an appointment for my gp so the receptionist made me one to see the nurse practitioner, I waited 40 minutes to see her , I had to explain everything again, went over old ground, after a little while I was told I would have to leave because there were other patients to see, I do understand that there is a time limit, but I cant help having to explain the reason for my visit, then after a further few minutes I was told I would have to go because the nurse practitioner needed a wee, well i'm sorry , but this can,t be right, surely.I have never been spoken to like that by any professional in this practice before.I left the surgery really upset and not knowing where to turn and no better off than when I went in, in fact worse off.I really don't know whats going on here but it is obvious when you speak to other patients that the appointments system isn't a one off occurrence,,as for the way I was told to leave I sincerely hope other patients havn't been treat this way, I was really upset and confused.

We are very sorry that the service you received was unacceptable. We as a practice have realised that the appointment system is not working for the patients or the staff within Orchard House Surgery.

We have audited the system and it is clear that improvements are required. The reason for the changes is that two GP partners have left the surgery recently and we find this leaves us with only 2 part time GP partners to manage the patient list.

Due to the GP shortages, we have employed a Nurse Practitioner and two long term locum GP's to help with the workload.

I am sure you are aware from the national press that this is an national problem throughout the country that we find ourselves with a shortage of GP's. What happened within your consultation should not have occurred, if you would like to contact a Manager and forward a formal complaint please do not hesitate.

We will treat your complaint as a significant event which means we will discuss in a meeting the numerous concerns you mention with our GP's and staff and formulate an appropriate action plan to alleviate this happening to any other patient.
