"Sonography"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

This is my third child, second scan with this child. All care I have received at musgrove, and this is the first I have ever felt the need to complain.

I had a ultrasound yesterday of my baby at 20 weeks, and it was the worst experience I have ever had. The person scanning me was pushing really hard, so much so that I was tensing and calling out. They told me I was sensitive and they weren't pushing any harder than they do with anyone else, which I find quite worrying.

I left the scan now worried about my baby as nothing was explained during the scan, this staff member hardly spoke. Their head was in the way of the screen the whole time so I didn't really get to see anything either. After looking at my notes babies head is below average, legs bigger than average, which was not explained and they didn't put ours minds at rest about. I also asked if my due date had changed which the reply was no, but on the notes I'm now measuring a week behind what I was.

The pictures provided were not worth the ten pounds we would've had to spend on one picture! Which is quite upsetting when you're willing to pay that amount and were looking forward to showing baby off.

On the drive home I experienced cramping and sickness, and later on at home urinating was difficult for 12 hours. I went and laid down to try and feel better, but still woke up sore and tender with the odd sharp pain by my belly button. Woke up this morning still feeling the same.

Now, I understand there can be some trouble with people with a higher BMI, but my 12 week scan was amazingly clear and I drank the same amount this time. There was no offer of drinking more or going for a wee to make things clearer, and this is the first problem I have ever had. The paperwork also says the sonographer couldn't check for all abnormalities because of the scan quality, so why were things not suggested to make the scan clearer, or a rebook?

Overall the experience was not please try for myself and my partner. I'm not usually a complainer in fact I've never had anything bad to say about musgrove, everyone has been amazing for me and I have had two children previously at the hospital. I am obviously concerned that this is normal practice for this sonographer and have been left worried about my baby when previously I wasn't.

Thank you for reading.
