"Negative experience with receptionist"

About: University Hospital Lewisham

I had a horrible experience the other day at Lewisham A&E. I was there for a self harm cut that needed stitches and was visibly distressed. The receptionist was talking to her colleague for a while despite me being in pain. When she spoke to me, she told me to stop being ‘like that’ (I Assume referring to my heavyish breathing from pain) as it was making her “feel funny”. And I had my cut in a tissue so she couldn’t see but When she saw me holding it She made a face. She asked what happened and when I said I did it to myself she repeated it out loud so I felt embarrassed. The receptionist needs to be better trained for issues relating not only to medical care but mental health. The nurse who saw me and dressed my wound was lovely however and made up for the negative experience.

We are sorry that you have had a negative experience at our reception and feel strongly that this needs to be addressed urgently with the relevant staff member. We would be grateful if you could contact our PALS department 020 8333 3355 with further details so that we can investigate.

We take all such concerns seriously and aim to help staff to improve by using real examples. Thank you in advance of your help.

Kind regards

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust
