"Safety and lack of stimulation"

About: South West London And St George's Mental Health NHS Trust

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was on Rose ward for the last 3 months. I am concerned that she had to go to A& E 6 times in that period. 3 times for acts of self harm where she had access to materials she shouldnt have and was on a one to one.  For example a can of drink and medication.  She also managed to act on suicidal throughts  because her 1: 1 did not go into the bathroom with her. These are all serious incidents that could have resulted in her death. Staff were not vigilant, doing 1: 1 properly and being given proper handovers.

My daughter became more unwell the longer she stayed on Rose Ward I think  through lack of stimulation. They have a wall with activities on but these do not happen apart from PAT dog, I was told this was through lack of OT. Not my daughters problem, there were no groups such as mindfulness or coping skills and no therapy. It was a long boring endless day for my 18 year old daughter who has been stuck in hospital for a very long time. She came to Rose Ward because she was waiting for a therapuetic residential she got so bad she has ended up going to another hospital. I am writing this because I don't want what I feel is neglect to happen to another patient, I fear that there will mean serious harm to others on this ward due to incompetence and lack of due care when caring out 1; 1. Also how are people supposed to get better when they are not given anything to do or helped to cope with negative thoughts and feelings.

Dear Mum with concerns

My name is Farai and I am the Engagement and Experience Co-ordinator for the Trust.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I am truly sorry for what seems to have been a terrible experience for both yourself and your daughter on Rose ward.

I have passed this story onto the Matron for this service and I will post their response to you as soon as I have it.

However, please be assured that the Trust wishes for everyone to have a good experience of care and if you would like to make a formal complaint or discuss this further please contact the PALS team on 020 3513 6150 or email complaints@swlstg.nhs.uk

Once again I am truly sorry and I wish your daughter all the best on her recovery journey.

Kind regards

Farai
