"Danbury Ward review"

About: Broomfield Hospital

I had an excellent experience in A&E department but as soon as I was taken to Danbury ward my experience was not very good at all. In fact I'm so glad to be home now.

From the minute I got there things weren't good. I was already being given fluids from the A&E ward then when I arrived at Danbury ward a nurse briefly introduced herself and said she would get a pump for my fluids then disappeared for a long time. I kept asking when she was going to start the fluids again and I was told that there were no pumps and that she had to order one then I was just left again.

From then on it just depended on what staff were on duty, some of the nursing staff were excellent and some were very poor and had such a bad attitude. I think it was a couple of days before I was asked if I wanted my bed made and then the nurse disappeared. I was given a blood transfusion one night but the cannula was failing and I was in a lot of pain. The nurse fiddled with it and walked away. It became so painful that I rang for a nurse and it was a long while before one came. The sister was very good but I didn't like the attitude of some other nurses.

My experience continued to go downhill. In short the ward was very understaffed in nurses and doctors. I also felt that some of the very sick patients in my bay should have had a room for their dignity and their relatives. It made me feel very anxious for them.

I have had treatment at Broomfield hospital for about 27 years now and in the beginning it was excellent. My consultant treated me with such respect and was always there for me. I was extremely ill at the time and if it wasn't for him I would not have survived. Since he retired in 2010 my treatment has gone downhill .This latest experience on Danbury ward is the worst ever!

Dear Nicola

Thank you for the lovely comments about the care you received in A&E, It is however disappointing to read the experience you had whilst in Danbury Ward. I shall forward the feedback to the Matrons and Senior Sisters for both areas so they can address with the teams.

We really appreciate you taking the time to share with us the experience of both services.

Best wishes - Patient Experience Team
