"My experiences with NHS Scotland in the last 2/3 years"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cardiology / Coronary Care Unit Dr Gray's Hospital / Cardiology (Heart Conditions) Dr Gray's Hospital / Ophthalmology (Eye Problems) General Practices in Grampian

(as a service user),

About three years ago I began having 'episodes', the strangest feeling in my head and chest. The trouble was these episodes were short, intermittent, unpredictable and so it took time to diagnose what was causing them. However, my GP was very patient and persistent and eventually organised a Holter monitor from Dr Gray's Hospital for me to wear for a week. That’s when it was discovered that my ‘episodes’ were in fact my heart stopping. I was immediately admitted to the Cardiology ward at Dr Gray’s and then transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where a pacemaker was inserted. That was two years ago and I feel this gave me my life back.

The care I received in both hospitals was excellent. Aberdeen Cardiology department is state of the art and the staff are exceptional. I was treated with respect, consulted and involved. I really appreciated this and felt I was in the best possible place and received excellent treatment from everyone. (Though I might have to temper that by saying that if you have to have a cannula inserted, insist on a nurse carrying out the procedure - that way it is quick and painless!)

As I’ve got older I’ve had problems with sight and hearing and once again I have been in good hands in the Ophthalmology and Audiology departments. I have hearing aids and am awaiting a cataract operation. I am aware I carry on life to the full courtesy of NHS Scotland. I feel fortunate to live at this time when all of these treatments and aids are available.

I have every faith in the staff who deal with me. I particularly appreciate the fact that doctors, nurses and other staff take time to explain and discuss procedures and treatments with me. I am fortunate to live in Forres where our relatively new Health and Care Centre seems to me to go from strength to strength.

Im glad to hear that the time you spent within the Cardiology service was positive and will pass this on to our team who will be delighted to hear that you felt they have made a difference to your life. We aim to treat all of our patients with respect and dignity and I'm very happy to read that you felt consulted and involved in your care at all times.

I hope your upcoming Opthalmology treatment goes well.
