"My Daughters stay in the Childrens unit"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My Daughter was admitted to Musgrove Hospital via our doctor one afternoon and the next morning was having an operation for sepsis of the hip. Fluid had to be drained from the hip and she was put in a hip spica for a week, she was only 21 months old and the staff at Musgrove were really fantastic and the nurses and play team on the ward were absolutely great, so caring and kind.

However the unit is in desperate need of a revamp, we had to stay in the hospital for 8 nights, I could of managed 1 or 2 nights but 8 nights, being placed on the corridor with people coming and going at all hours, next to the kitchen and double doors leading to another ward, the lights fully on until late at night is not good! We had a room for the last 2 nights as we were on what felt like an a&e section of the ward and me and my daughter were exhausted.  The fold out chairs that parents need to sleep on are absolutely horrendous, the curtains don't go around each section properly, the layout of the ward has obviously been changed and not the curtain tracks.

For the last 2 nights we were in a private room which is used for oncology patients so were obviously only in there if it was not needed and were prepared to move at anytime, but the fold out sofa beds parents had to sleep on were utterly horrifying. They were so stained and dirty I laid blankets on the mattress with a duvet on top then led on the duvet. Very sad, those rooms should be made as comfortable as possible firstly for the patients and just a decent place for the parents to rest and be with their child.

Other areas of the hospital has clearly had a lot of money spent on it but the children's wards really need updating.  The staff were amazing but if I had to do overnight stays again Musgrove would not be my first choice.

Big thank you to the staff at Musgrove. xx

Thank you so much for your very honest feedback about your stay on the Children's unit at Musgrove. First of all it's lovely to hear your positive feedback about the staff, I will certainly make sure this is passed onto them. They are a lovely team and will appreciate your thanks.

I was really sad to read about the environmental issues and this is something I need to pick up on and see what we can do to make some changes and to make a difference for everyone. Your suggestions would be really valuable as someone who has used the facilities so perhaps you could email me directly with some of your 'make-over' ideas.

Whilst we would love to be working towards a new 21st century children's unit, this is not in the immediate plans for development at Musgrove, but we will now be looking at what we can do to make it somewhere you would want to stay.

My contact email is:

I hope to hear from you soon.
