I was recently diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, from the very beginning staff within EPAS at crosshouse maternity unit were more than amazing! I was given the choice between medical management & surgical management. After much deliberation & discussion with the midwife & consultant I chose medical. Over the coming weeks I had regular blood tests to ensure my hcg levels were reducing, which they were. I was having pains every so often which made me concerned as I was still at risk of rupturing. I made regular phone calls to EPAS who always kept me reassured & calm & made me feel valued as a patient. On my 3rd week for blood tests I had been having extreme pain & after telling the midwives they had me in for scans straight away & assured me that the consultant would be visiting me. I felt that I was listened to as an individual & taken seriously. Upon further scans & blood tests I had to have surgery to remove my Fallopian tube. From the very beginning the midwives were compassionate & extremely reassuring. They made me laugh when I needed it & kept me calm & informed with every decision. I felt that the staff in the unit truly valued me as a person & not just another patient with a condition that needed to be treated. I was never made to feel silly for being scared & upset & I felt that they truly cared for my wellbeing. I would like to massively thank midwife Rachel who had been through each stage of my ectopic pregnancy from the beginning. She made me feel included and valued & I cannot thank her enough for the care & compassion she has shown myself.
After having surgery as I was settling into the gynaecology ward, Rachel came to visit me & give me some information on ectopic pregnancy clinics & support numbers. I felt this beyond her duties to see how I was doing after surgery. Overall the care I received within the weeks I returned to EPAS was amazing. From the receptionist, midwives, hcsw, radiographers & medics I was treated with dignity, compassion & respect. I was made to feel valued as a person & kept included within my care. I want to thank all staff & ensure they get the recognition they deserve!
