"Abysmal Urgent Care"

About: Hospital Of St Cross / Accident and emergency

I was referred to the out of hours urgent care by NHS 111.

I was told I would be contacted by a Doctor. At no point was I able to speak to a doctor because there ARE NO DOCTORS at Rugby Urgent Care Centre (This was a Sunday evening). Even the Nurse Practitioner I eventually spoke to said I needed to attend quickly as they were about to go home!

I tried to explain that my daughter was too ill for me to bring her in (she had severe abdominal pain and vomiting) and I needed the advice of a doctor to determine if I should call an ambulance. I was advised to give her paracetamol! All I got was the insistence to bring her in or to drive her to either Nuneaton or Coventry Walsgrave (40 minutes away) myself if I wished to see a doctor.

How can Rugby have 'Urgent Care' with apparently no access to a doctor? I would advise people who need urgent care not to waste their time and just dial 999.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback regarding your negative experience or urgent care at Hospital Of St Cross.

I have contacted the department and have escalated it to the leadership team to understand why this was the case.

They have informed me that out of hour’s service is run by Care UK and not UHCW NHS trust and have passed your feedback onto them.

We apologise that you and your daughter have not had the level of care which we would expect and will try to ensure occurrences do not take place in the future.

If you would like to discuss aspects of your care further then please contact the Trust’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0800 028 4203.
