"Excellent Care"

Dear Professor

I am writing to let you know about the excellent care that I have been receiving from the Oncology / Macmillan Unit.

Following a mastectomy in July of this year, I was placed under the care of a Doctor.

I have needed regular reviews which have been reassuring and I have found her upbeat positive manner therapeutic.

However, she is clearly under considerable time pressures with existing clinics full and her secretary having to schedule extra clinics to deal with the volume of patients needing to be seen.

This is reflected in the day to day work of the unit and on one occasion there was standing room only in Oncology with staff trying to find extra seating to accommodate patients, all achieved with kindness and good humour.

I have now had four chemotherapy treatments with space often at a premium in the Unit.

Despite this the staff work extremely hard to ensure that treatment is given as scheduled in a calm and professional manner often with snatched breaks and working late.

As a recently retired nurse I wonder how this excellent level of care can be sustained with ever increasing demand and the new Unit not scheduled for opening until 2020.

Even with the expansion of the existing premises in December of this year it appears that facilities will continue to be overstretched.

In conclusion, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all staff for their determined hard work in delivering such a high standard of care under such considerable pressures.
