My son aged 3 presented at A&E with suspected broken finger. We had a decent wait of 3 hours but it was the nurse practitioner Kirsty who was outstanding in her communication skills with my son that deserves a mention.
My son had had surgery a few weeks before and had reacted very badly to the pain during recovery. He needed longer than expected in hospital and become highly distressed by any nurse approaching him. He had refused all pain meds and we found staff to be too forceful in trying to get oral meds into him. We eventually withdrew consent for further meds and we were discharged and left to get on with it. Not the best
However- focusing on the positive- nurse Kirsty was just an absolute joy- patient yet effective, full of child centred energy and won him over easily. We were nervous about how he would be after his recent past experience and now feel confident that he will manage any future hospital visits.
Thank you Kirsty.
He’s even started taking calpol again!!
