"Corridor care"

About: Royal Free Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

I accompanied my father for an endoscopy procedure and everything went well from the pre checklist care and the actual procedure to the recovery.

When I met him after the recovery, he was accompanied by a nurse. I greeted dad and he was fine about the care he received. The nurse than indicated she they would like to speak to both of and explain what they have found , what to expect from the recovery aspects in the next 48 hours, and what will happen next.

Now mind you, I work in a hospital environment, and I know how you have to be sensitive about not only how you deliver it, but also the environment around you when speaking to patients and their families about personal information.

So I was expecting us to be shown a room where we can discuss these issues.

But alas, it was not to be.

She proceeded to go straight into these personal information in the middle of a buzzing outpatient corridor.

My dad seemed embarrassed and uncomfortable, so I did not interrupt her, so we can be on our way as soon as possible.

Is this a normal protocol?

Dear Nay,
Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

I have shared your story with the senior matron for the area who has asked if I can clarify a few things with you to help him address your comments.

Could you please email me at rf.patientexperience@nhs.net and we can take it from there.

I look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes,

Hayley

Update posted by Nay (a relative)

Thank you for replying to my story Hayley.

Appreciate the quick response.

Since I've taken to the decision to make my story public, I would not take the offer to go off line to further discuss my father's experience.

Our story was straightforward and should be simple to ascertain what was good (pre care and the procedure), and where we felt improvement is needed ie communication, dignity, privacy.

Is the matron able to:

1. Acknowledge our feeling sincerely

2. Be upfront and open if you think the after care provided matched your organisation/department values. If that's not the case, what are you planning to change.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Nay
