Since my Uncle was admitted to the Sheldon Unit I cannot express my thanks enough, for the team of staff who are caring for him and the facilities available to him and myself as a relative.
On so many levels this unit has it just right.
From the friendliness and professionalism of the staff to the cleanliness of the unit but also the genuine care which they are giving to my Uncle across the board.
On a personal level, being able to visit at any time of the day is such a comfort and takes away the stress of trying to get time off from work to fit around the hours. I am never kept waiting when entering the ward and always met with a smile by every member of the team. Being able to make myself a drink and sit in the relatives room for reflection is also of great benefit and helps wellbeing. Attention to detail like the toilet and hand basins are always sparkling and tidy and drinking facilities always well stocked.
I always know when I arrive that my Uncle's hygene needs will be totally met, from being washed and clean shaven to having clean clothes and even a dab of aftershave, to the bed linen being immaculate and the surfaces of his tray table and clothes wardrobe are always clean too. Being able to bring in small items from home to make it personal to him are also very important to him and myself. All of this nurtures an ethos of reassurance and trust between the patient, staff and families.
The calmness and friendliness of the whole Unit means that I do not feel afraid to ask about any area of my uncle's health and know that he is getting the best care to keep him comfortable. I am even pre advised if he is being moved to another bed within the ward to ensure I am not worried when I arrive.
Often in the news we only ever get to hear the negative spin on how the NHS is doing and genuinely did not know that such a facility as the Sheldon Unit exsited within the NHS. Simply saying thank you does not seem to be enough praise for such a wonderful facility but know my Uncle would wish me to pass on his and my gratitude to make sure the team do not go unrecognised.
Long may this type of unit and support be available to individuals who are at the end of their lives and are allowed to leave this world with dignity and feeling loved.
"A Shining Diamond in our local NHS"
