"Visit to A and E after road accident"

About: Yeovil District Hospital / Accident and emergency

I was taken to A and in Yeovil on 21 October 2018, following a road accident.

I had knee, wrist and chest injuries.

I was taken to triage, in a wheelchair, by the paramedic, then left on my own. Being told that someone would be with me shortly. I waited 25 minutes in triage before my name was called by a rather sullen male nurse. He asked me about my injuries. I was not asked if I required anything. I had to ask for water! He then said that I would need an X-ray on my knee and to follow him. He shot off down the corridor not waiting to see if I could keep up with him. I couldn't! I was told to sit in an area and wait to be called for an X-ray. I asked for details on my husband, who had been taken in a separate ambulance, but was told I needed the X-ray and then he would find out about my husband. After the X-ray I was told to wait again for a doctor to come and see me with the results. I went to the desk to ask about my husband again but was told to wait. Luckily I then saw him coming back from a scan and spoke to the A and E nurse, who gave me details on him. I then went and sat with him. A doctor came to see me about my knee X-ray to advise that there were no broken bones. About an hour later I was called again to have an X-ray on my chest. I was not aware that I was to have an X-ray on my chest. We never received the results of the chest X-ray despite asking on numerous occasions. Eventually we left the hospital as my husband was discharged. My husband had a fractured sternum and wrist. No pain killers were offered to either of us on our departure from A and E, we were advised to take Ibrufen and Paracetamol for any pain we may get. These did not touch our pain and we both had to visit our respective doctors to get stronger painkillers.

I felt that the A and E department lacked basic care and communication to their patients. My visit to yeovil A and E was not a good experience andleft a bit of a sour taste!
